School breaking ground on new home

The Bergen Record, 10/15/08 (c)

JOSEPH AX STAFF WRITER

TEANECK — The decade-old Teaneck Community Charter School plans to start construction today on its new home, capping a years-long effort to find a permanent facility. The new building, a former art supply warehouse on Chestnut Avenue, replaces the school's current home, a cramped second-story space at Ma'ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls on Palisade Avenue. "It'll be a state-of-the-art facility that will allow us to do a lot of the things we can't do here," said Rex Shaw, the school's executive director. "Bricks and mortar don't make education. But a comfort level for students does make a difference."

The project will cost $9.5 million, and the opening is set for the 2009-10 school year. The school serves 287 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. At the current rented space, students in Grades 5 to 8 attend classes in trailers.

Diamond Grant, an eighth-grader, said younger students are "really excited" about moving to the new building.

The charter school is one of half a dozen in North Jersey and approximately 60 statewide. Its students are selected through a blind lottery, with the exception of siblings of current students, who automatically go to the top of the list. Charter schools have been permitted in New Jersey since 1995.
